The UK is introducing a more streamlined and digital approach to managing its borders with the implementation of Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs). This new system aims to enhance border security while making the process quicker and easier for millions of travellers.
What is an ETA?
An ETA is a digital travel permission required for visitors to the UK who do not currently need a visa for short stays or those without an existing UK immigration status. While it grants permission to travel to the UK, it does not guarantee entry, which will still be determined at the border.
Who Needs an ETA?
- Eligible non-Europeans require an ETA to travel to the UK.
- Europeans can apply for an ETA starting 5 March 2025 and will need one to travel from 2 April 2025.
- British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA.
Residents of Ireland from non-visa-required countries (such as the US or EU nations) travelling within the Common Travel Area will also not need an ETA, provided they have acceptable proof of residence. However, if travelling to the UK from outside this area, an ETA will be required.
Key Details About ETAs
- Cost: £10
- Validity: Allows multiple visits to the UK for stays of up to six months over a period of two years or until the holder’s passport expires (whichever is sooner).
- Similar systems are already in use by countries like the US and Australia.
How to Apply for an ETA
The application process is designed to be quick and user-friendly:
- Download the UK ETA app (available on Google Play or Apple App Store) or apply via GOV.UK.
- Provide passport and contact details, a compliant digital photo, and answer a set of questions.
- Pay the application fee.
Most decisions are made within three working days, but using the UK ETA app can lead to faster results. Travellers must use the same passport for travel as was used during the application process.
ETAs and Border Security
The ETA system enhances the UK’s ability to assess and prevent individuals who pose a potential threat. Applicants provide biographic, biometric, and contact details, enabling a thorough vetting process before travel.
What Happens if an ETA is Refused?
- If an application is rejected, the applicant will be notified of the reason and may reapply.
- If refused, there is no appeal process; instead, the individual must apply for a visa if they still wish to travel to the UK.
Northern Ireland and the ETA
There are no routine immigration controls between Ireland and Northern Ireland. However, individuals travelling to Northern Ireland from outside the Common Travel Area will need an ETA if their nationality requires one.
